The Case for Core ETFs: Building Blocks, Not Bets

The Fund That Keeps It Boring

Most of your investing life, your job is not to be clever. It is to own the productive economy at a fair price, then get out of your own way. Broad index ETFs do exactly that: one security, thousands of companies, market-weighting, low cost.

That is the entire thesis. There is no nuance hiding behind the marketing page — that is the point.

What a Core ETF Actually Holds

Take the three workhorses every dashboard should carry:

None of these is a prediction. They are a statement: "I want to own the whole thing, forever, cheaply."

Why Market Weighting Wins

Active managers collectively are the market — minus their fees. Index funds let you capture the market's return without paying for the privilege of holding it. The evidence is relentless: over any 15-year window, the majority of active funds underperform their benchmark after fees.

Fees are the one thing you can control. An expense ratio of 0.03% versus 0.60% is not a rounding error — over 30 years it is the difference between keeping or giving up a meaningful slice of compounding.

How to Use the Dashboard

On our ETF dashboard, every fund shows a six-month trend line. Resist the habit of reading it as a recommendation. The trend line tells you one thing only: what happened. Risk and valuation tell you what might come next.

A falling line on a core holding is not a sell signal — it is a buying opportunity for a balanced investor whose plan anticipates drawdowns. That is why the rest of this site focuses relentlessly on allocation rules and behavior, not on which fund "won" last quarter.

The Building Blocks

Before picking anything clever, confirm the core is in place: a global equity base, a bond sleeve, and a cash reserve. ETFs are the cheapest, most transparent way to hold those blocks. The clever stuff — sector bets, credit picks, single markets — is optional and should never exceed the portion of your portfolio you can afford to lose without changing your life.
